World number 28 Elise Mertens took the first set in her opening Eastbourne match against Karolina Pliskova before falling away to a retirement in the third and she pulled out of ‘s-Hertogenbosch entirely before that. The Belgian has reached at least the third round in each of her last four appearances here in Wimbledon as one of the most consistent performers at this level on the WTA tour but doubts over her fitness make this match worth leaving alone. World number 127 Viktoria Hruncakova upset Clara Tauson in qualifying to build on her excellent run to the semi-finals at ‘s-Hertogenbosch last month and the Slovak will feel there is a real opportunity of an upset here. Mertens leads Hruncakova 3-0 after beating her in the first round at Roland-Garros only recently but it is wise to leave this be until we see how she fares.
