ELISE MERTENS VS PETRA MARTIC PREDICTION
World number 27 Elise Mertens beat up-and-coming Maria Carle in straight sets on Tuesday, 10-8 in the second-set tiebreak to look dialled-in and ready to maintain her incredible streak here.
The uber-consistent Belgian has reached at least the third round in each of her seven previous appearances at Roland-Garros and she has lost before the third round just three times at any major since her career-best run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open in 2018.
The former number 12 take son former number 14 Petra Martic, who beat wildcard Kristina Mladenovic in straight sets on Tuesday. 33-year-old Martic is a tricky draw on any surface on her day but the Croat has endured a tough 2024 so far, with a five-match losing streak coming into Paris now thankfully snapped.
28-year-old Mertens has never lost to Martic, leading their head-to-head 4-0 after last spring’s straight-sets win in Miami, but clay should level the playing field a little. Their respective form this year, however, makes backing the Belgian to win in straight sets a reasonable risk.
