World number 32 Elise Mertens snapped an incredible streak of reaching at least the third round at Grand Slams at 18 here last summer with a shock first round exit to Irina Camelia-Begu. The 27-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th in 2018 after setting her best effort at a major with a semi-final exit at the Australian Open and she reached back-to-back quarter-finals here in 2019 and 2020 before falling away in recent seasons. The Belgian still has plenty of time to return to her former glory at 27 years old but in any case she should be able to come comfortably through this opener against Mirjam Bjorklund, who earned her debut here in New York after coasting through three kind qualifying rounds.
