World number 26 Elise Mertens received a bye to the round of 16 at the Linz Open as the fourth seed this week, coming in hot from winning the Women’s Doubles alongside Su-Wei Hsieh at the Australian Open last weekend. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Emma Navarro at the Hobart International before Melbourne last month to look set for another solid season at this sort of level and she should be considered a reasonable favourite against Lucia Bronzetti despite the Italian’s excellent opener over the returning Angelique Kerber. Only Elena Rybakina and Marta Kostyuk have beaten Mertens in singles so far in 2024 whilst Bronzetti brought her record for the year up to 2-3 with victory over Kerber on Tuesday. The Italian is a handful on clay but back Mertens to win this first encounter in conditions that suit her best.
