World number three Jessica Pegula was in control against Camila Giorgi before her opponent retired in the second set of their second round match on Wednesday. The 29-year-old reached the quarter-finals here last season before suffering one of her four defeats to her nemesis, world number one Iga Swiatek, in 2022. World number 28 Elise Mertens beat Camila Osorio in straight sets on Wednesday to maintain her remarkable record of making at least the third round at Roland-Garros in every season since her debut here in 2017 but she has reached the second week just once. The Belgian has, notably, won both previous meetings with Pegula in two quarter-finals at the 2020 Cincinnati Masters (held in New York that season) and the Dubai Tennis Championships in 2021 but the American is much-improved since then. This looks a very tricky clash for Pegula but back the third seed to edge through to the round of 16.
