THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Paula Badosa first burst onto the scene here back in 2021 when she became the first Spanish woman to reach the semi-finals of the Madrid Open. The current world number 42 went on to win her most prestigious title to date at Indian Wells in the delayed October edition but after starting last season on fire she drastically dimmed throughout the rest of 2022 and we have only recently seen signs of a resurgence. The last three players to beat Badosa are Elena Rybakina, twice, Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka which suggests she is ready to make a push back towards the top 20 but this is no gimme in the first round of Madrid with so much pressure on her shoulders. World number 50 Elisabetta Cocciaretto is an up-and-comer who favours clay too and she did well to play the game and not the occasion against the returning Barbora Strycova on Tuesday. A first meeting with Badosa is likely to fall the Spaniard’s way in two sets but given her recent struggles with belief on court the suitably sensible call is backing Badosa to win outright.
