THE PREDICTION

22-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 45th this week after a few deep runs this season, including reaching her maiden WTA final at the Hobart International before losing in straight sets to Lauren Davis. World number 53 Davis takes a three-match losing streak into the Italian Open after suffering fitness issues since claiming her second career title back in January but she did well to reach the semi-finals of a Challenger event on her favoured clay last week to look competitive here. Home clay favours Cocciaretto, who should get a strong support as one of the higher-ranked home hopefuls in Rome, and the Italian should fare better on her favoured surface. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record but this first meeting on clay should be a level playing field. Back Davis to earn at least a set given their recent meeting and leave the victor up to chance.
