Former world number four Sofia Kenin moved back inside the top 100 on tour after backing-up her remarkable upset over Coco Gauff in the first round with an assured straight-sets win over Xinyu Wang on Thursday. The 24-year-old won the Australian Open in 2020 and finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros later that season to look a top 10 stalwart for years to come but she has suffered a myriad of issues on and off-court over the last few seasons to fall off the tour altogether until the start of 2023. Former world number three Elina Svitolina is also repairing her ranking after taking time off the tour to have her first child with fellow tennis player Gael Monfils. The 28-year-old fast-tracked her return to the top 100 with an incredible nine-match winning streak that saw her claim the 17th title of her career at the Strasbourg Open before a run to the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last month. Svitolina overcame five-time former champion Venus Williams in the first round and 28th seed Elise Mertens in the second to survive a tough draw so far but if Kenin can maintain her level the American looks the slightest of favourites.
A confident Kenin is capable of top five tennis but Svitolina, at her best, is the more dependable performer. Svitolina leads their head-to-head 3-2 but Kenin has earned at least a set in four of their five encounters to suggest a suitable option in lieu of picking a winner. Back the American to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance in what should be a thriller.
