ELINA SVITOLINA
Former world number three Elina Svitolina was ranked outside the top 500 on tour at the start of May after returning from maternity leave but she stunned world number one Iga Swiatek in three sets on Tuesday to move back inside the top 30 in the live WTA rankings. The 28-year-old has come back to tour with a totally different outlook, and a much more aggressive game, with inspiration and determination as a mother and as a native of Ukraine to finally capitalise on her talents, reaching the last four here for a second time after doing so at her previous peak in 2019. Svitolina also reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros last month before defeat to Aryna Sabalenka and she will be desperate to put herself in the final for the chance to avenge that.
MARKETA VONDROUSOVA
Former world number 14 Marketa Vondrousova has also fast-tracked her return to the top 30 after returning to tour at the start of this season from a long absence. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019 but she had never been past the second round here at Wimbledon, fighting tooth-and-nail through one of the tougher draws with upsets over Veronika Kudermetova, Donna Vekic and world number four Jessica Pegula on Tuesday. Vondrousova owns just one WTA title from 2017 but she has reached two prestigious finals in Paris and more recently at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, where she took silver to Belinda Bencic’s gold after defeating Elina Svitolina in the semi-finals.
THE PREDICTION
This should be a fascinating match between Marketa Vondrousova’s sometimes inexplicable brand of tennis and this all-new aggressive Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian is likely to receive an almost partisan backing on Centre Court after her incredible exploits over the last two weeks and he story as a new mother fighting for her country’s pride has fast become the main narrative at SW19. Svitolina leads Vondrousova 3-2 in their head-to-head record but the Czech has won each of their last two meetings in very comfortable fashion, although this first meeting on grass probably favours Svitolina. Vondrousova has earned at least a set in four of their five encounters whilst Svitolina has done so only in her three wins but it is no understatement that the Ukrainian has never been such a threat. Back Svitolina to utilise the crowd’s love to edge through outright here, probably in three.
