Former world number three Elina Svitolina returned from maternity leave this season ranked outside the top 500 on tour but she comes into the US Open as the 26th seed after a truly remarkable summer. The Ukrainian has returned a new and improved version of herself to win a 17th WTA title at the Strasbourg Open, reach the quarter-finals in Roland-Garros and then surpass even that with a huge run to the semi-finals at Wimbledon last month and it will be fascinating to see what she can do in New York on what has typically been her strongest surface.
