THE PREDICTION
World number four Casper Ruud was stunned by Nicolas Jarry from a set up in the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open this week as the departing two-time defending champion there. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal here last summer in a one-sided affair that looked a little bit like hero worship in places but he fared better in his second Grand Slam final of the season at the US Open in a four-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz. The Norwegian has struggled to find anything like his 2022 intensity so far this season, with plenty of early upsets amongst his 16-11 record coming into Paris. Ruud had never made it past the third round at Roland-Garros before last summer but he should be targeting at least the quarter-finals here on his favoured surface, on which he has won nine of his 10 titles so far. World number 155 Elias Ymer should not be a threat to Ruud’s campaign but the Swede certainly fares a slight chance at causing a problem based on his impressive victory over in-form Yannick Hanfmann in qualifying. A first meeting between the two suits them both on clay and backing Ruud to win outright looks the sensible concession here.
