THE PREDICTION
World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova enjoyed perhaps the most impressive day of her career after upsetting second seed Aryna Sabalenka in three tight sets and then beating Belinda Bencic in two later on Friday. The Russian should be feeling it after two matches in a day due to rain delays but she could just as easily be battle-hardened and ready to challenge world number four Elena Rybakina with the confidence of a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head. Samsonova beat Rybakina here in Montreal two years ago and again en-route to the Tokyo Open title late last season but Rybakina remains the favourite as an improved player since then. The Kazakh has looked a little jaded at times this week, though, having to come back from sets down twice to Jennifer Brady and Daria Kasatkina to show some rare weakness. Anyone who beats Aryna Sabalenka on a hardcourt has a chance of going on to win the title so consider backing Samsonova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
