World number six Elena Rybakina came back from a set down to beat world number one, and two-time defending champion, Iga Swiatek after the Pole was forced to retire late in the third. 23-year-old Rybakina extended her rare positive record over Swiatek to 3-1 to look every bit a threat to both the title here in Rome and incoming Roland-Garros but former Paris champion Jelena Ostapenko will be a serious challenge in her current guise. The 25-year-old has beaten four very tough foes on clay this fortnight including fellow former Roland-Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova and former world number two Paula Badosa to make the semi-finals and there is no doubt that she is the more comfortable performer in these conditions despite Rybakina’s feats. Rybakina beat Ostapenko in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January, en-route to finishing runner-up there, but the Latvian leads their head-to-head record 2-1. Back Rybakina to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance as Ostapenko’s lesser-spotted top gear is a match for anyone.
