THE PREDICTION
World number five Elena Rybakina received a bye to the round of 16 at the Abu Dhabi Open as the top seed this week but she could well have done with a kinder opener given her odd recent results. The 24-year-old stunned the field at the Brisbane International, setting out her stall as the favourite to win the Australian Open with a 6-0 6-3 victory over Aryna Sabalenka, but she suffered an odd defeat to Ekaterina Alexandrova a week later in Adelaide before a remarkable second round exit to Anna Blinkova in Melbourne – losing out 22-20 in the longest Grand Slam tiebreak in history.
Former world number nine Danielle Collins beat Rybakina en-route to her second WTA title won in San Jose back in 2021 and she reached the Australian Open final a year later before more recently struggling for consistent form. The American appears to be in one of her better recent moments after a fierce three-set battle with Iga Swiatek in Melbourne last month and an assured straight-sets result over the returning Naomi Osaka here on Tuesday, and she has notably taken at least a set in each of her three encounters with Rybakina despite trailing 1-2. Back Collins, who came through qualifying handily this week to bring some strong momentum, to win at least a set with an upset in the air.
