THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Elena Rybakina will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of at least fifth by reaching her fourth final of the season at the Italian Open. The Kazakh finished runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open in January and to Petra Kvitova at the Miami Open but she claimed her first Masters title at Indian Wells and she looks the reasonable favourite to back that up here. World number 47 Anhelina Kalinina has been the story of the Italian Open so far, though, after surprising herself with feats of endurance against Beatriz Haddad-Maia in the longest three-set match of the season so far. The 26-year-old will set a career-high WTA world ranking of 25th if she loses this final but she can break the top 20 on tour for the first time with victory to look a strong outsider at fast-approaching Roland-Garros.
Kalinina won their only previous encounter just over a year ago at the Charleston Open, on clay, but despite the Ukrainian’s herculean efforts this fortnight Rybakina has come through two of the very best on this surface in two-time defending champion Iga Swiatek and Jelena Ostapenko with some serious grit. Back the Kazakh to win outright here but expect the crowd to get behind the underdog in a match that could go all the way.
