28-year-old Viktoriya Tomova has enjoyed her best season so far this year to come into Roland-Garros at a career-high WTA world ranking of 71st but this looks a very unkind opening draw. World number 23 Ekaterina Alexandrova started 2023 relatively poorly but a recent surge in form saw her reach the quarter-finals at the Miami Masters and she took a rare set from Iga Swiatek on clay at the Madrid Open before a tight defeat in the round of 16. The 28-year-old has yet to live up to her level on tour at a Grand Slam but she has been most consistent here in Paris, winning each of her last four opening matches including two third round runs. Tomova has upset a few top players this season but Alexandrova should be coming through this opener in straight sets.
