World number 22 Ekaterina Alexandrova beat Lin Zhu in straight sets on Friday to build on a solid week in Cleveland, whilst number 95 Sara Sorribes Tormo completed a much more impressive run of results in two against Tatjana Maria. 26-year-old Sorribes Tormo is through to her second tour final without dropping a set after out-battling Sloane Stephens and Veronika Kudermetova and she won her first to lift her maiden WTA title in Guadalajara two years ago. The Spaniard set a career-high WTA world ranking of 32nd early last season before an injury ended her year early and she is far better than her current ranking suggests as she aims to climb back up. 28-year-old Alexandrova is through to her seventh career final with a 4-2 record after defending her Libema Open title in June. This could end up a thrilling battle between Alexandrova’s hard hitting and Sorribes Tormo’s super defence but the Russian’s better experience at this level should see her edge through.
