THE PREDICTION
24-year-old Marketa Vondrousova came into the US Open at a career-high WTA world ranking of ninth after her incredible run to the Wimbledon title in July. The Czech ghosted through to the quarter-finals at SW19 before anyone took much notice of her vastly impressive form and she looks content to do so again in New York, although tournament organisers have put her in the spotlight a little bit with this the last match on Louis Armstrong on Saturday. Vondrousova has conceded just seven games so far but world number 20 Ekaterina Alexandrova should be capable of taking that many on her own after some impressive recent form. The 28-year-old overcame 2021 runner-up Leylah Fernandez in three sets in the first round before a consummate win over Lesia Tsurenko on Thursday but she has displayed something of a ceiling against the very top players on tour.
Whilst Vondrousova has only recently joined that upper echelon, the Czech has given us little evidence to suggest she is not the favourite. Vondrousova beat Alexandrova in three sets in Adelaide back in January and she can be backed to come through the outright winner here.
