THE PREDICTION
This is a very tough call between in-form world number 20 Ekaterina Alexandrova and number 46 Lesia Tsurenko, who has won all four of their previous meetings in straight sets. 28-year-old Alexandrova overcame former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in a three-set battle that could lay the bedrock for a deep run in New York after finishing runner-up to Sara Sorribes Tormo in Cleveland last week but former number 23 Tsurenko has reached back-to-back rounds of 16 at Grand Slams this summer, losing to Iga Swiatek in Paris and to Jessica Pegula at Wimbledon. The 34-year-old needed three sets to beat lucky loser Elsa Jacquemot on Tuesday after Bianca Andreescu was forced to withdraw from their first round fixture and on recent form Alexandrova looks able to overcome this oddly one-sided head-to-head. Given two three-set openers and her poor record against Tsurenko, take Alexandrova to earn at least a set to leave the victory up to chance – particularly as the crowd will pull as one for her Ukrainian opponent.
