World number 22 Ekaterina Alexandrova made it six wins on the spin on Tuesday with a straight-sets victory over Liudmila Samsonova, whom she also beat en-route to the Libema Open title on Sunday. The 28-year-old successfully defended her title in Rosmalen last weekend to lift her fourth career WTA trophy and she should be considered an outside factor at Wimbledon in two weeks’ time if she can maintain this intensity. World number seven Coco Gauff first burst onto the scene at Wimbledon in 2019, beating Venus Williams at just 15 years old in the first round before making the round of 16 on her tour debut. The American, now 19, beat Katerina Siniakova in straight sets on Tuesday to get her Berlin campaign underway but she has so far struggled to find her very best level in 2023 to throw some serious doubt over this clash with Alexandrova.
The crowd will get behind the teenager here but three sets seem likelier than two, as happened in their only previous encounter that just-about edged Gauff’s way at the Dubai Tennis Championships two years ago. Back in-form Alexandrova to earn at least a set given her winning streak and leave the victor up to chance.
