World number 22 Ekaterina Alexandrova is lucky to still be in the draw after making over 90 unforced errors in a poor three-set victory over Madison Brengle in the second round but she was much-improved on Saturday, conceding just four games to Dalma Galfi. The 28-year-old successfully defended her Libema Open title last month to bring some excellent form on grass into SW19, with two of her now four WTA titles coming on the surface, and she reached the semi-finals in Berlin a week later before defeat to eventual champion Petra Kvitova.
ARYNA SABALENKA
World number two Aryna Sabalenka beat Anna Blinkova in straight sets on Saturday to improve considerably on her choppy three-set result over Varvara Gracheva. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals here in 2021 before defeat to eventual runner-up Karolina Pliskova but she returns two years on as a new Grand Slam champion after beating Elena Rybakina, the reigning champion here, in three sets at the Australian Open in January. Sabalenka has never lost a quarter-final at this level, with three round of 16 defeats and five semi-finals reached suggesting she can emulate her run at Wimbledon if she survives this next match.
THE PREDICTION
Big-serving Aryna Sabalenka take son hard-hitting Ekaterina Alexandrova on Monday for a blistering match likely to see few rallies. 28-year-old Alexandrova has already set her best Grand Slam run by reaching the round of 16 here and she leads the Belarussian 3-2 in their head-to-head, notably winning two of her four WTA titles in finals against Sabalenka at the Shenzhen Open in 2017 and last summer’s Libema Open. A first meeting with this new and improved Sabalenka is unlikely to go her way this time but there is certainly scope for an upset here. All five of their matches have been settled in straight sets but three seem about as likely as two on this occasion. Take Sabalenka to win outright.
