THE PREDICTION
World number 70 Dusan Lajovic has been playing deceptively good tennis this season but the Serb would never have dreamed of beating his compatriot, world number one Novak Djokovic, in the manner in which he did on Friday. The 32-year-old was largely unshakable in a hugely entertaining straight-sets victory over the top seed, who is still far from the finished article on clay after struggling with an elbow issue this month, and if he can find that level in this semi-final it is hard to see him losing. World number 33 Miomir Kecmanovic is a serious threat, though, coming off a straight-sets victory over Jiri Lehecka in which he handed the rising star a second-set bagel. The 23-year-old may have to play second fiddle to Lajovic in the crowd’s eyes in this all-Serbian semi-final after the elder player’s exploits in the quarter-finals but a first meeting between the two leaves more questions than answers. Three sets seem likelier than two here and that makes backing Kecmanovic to earn at least one of them the sensible way to avoid picking a winner as we have so often seen players struggle to match their previous energy after beating an elite like Djokovic.
