THE PREDICTION

This promised to be a good-natured but fiercely contested clash between fellow Serbs in Dusan Lajovic and Laslo Djere, both of whom are at their best on clay. 28-year-old Djere won his most prestigious of two ATP titles here back in 2019 but Lajovic also owns two clay titles, including last spring’s excellent run to the Banja Luka crown via stupendous wins over Novak Djokovic and Andrey Rublev. 33-year-old Lajovic is arguably the better player at their respective peaks, with a runner-up finish at the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2019 perhaps his best achievement, but Djere has enjoyed the better recent results including finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Hamburg Open last summer.

Lajovic beat Djere in straight sets at this stage of the Rio Open this time last season but the pair share a 2-2 head-to-head at tour level, with Djere taking a 3-2 lead if we include Challenger results. Djere conceded just four sets against Bernabe Zapata Miralles on Monday to look ready for a battle but Lajovic has already survived one, coming back from a set down to beat Daniel Elahi Galan on Tuesday. Back Djere, with winning experience here in Rio, to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.

TIP: LASLO DJERE TO WIN A SET
