THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Rebeka Masarova overcame fellow Spaniard Cristina Bucsa in three sets on Wednesday to reach the second round of the Madrid Open for the first time and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 70th no matter the outcome here. Masarova fares a decent chance at the upset here given the home advantage and the fact that she has a match in these unique Madrid conditions under her belt already but world number 23 Donna Vekic remains the slight favourite after her renaissance season so far. Under new coach Pam Shriver the 26-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in January and she has added a fourth WTA title at the Monterrey Open in February. Vekic lost to Karolina Pliskova in three tight sets at the Stuttgart Open last time out to suggest she will be competitive this fortnight but backing her to win outright is the sensible concession here.
