THE PREDICTION
World number 16 Liudmila Samsonova beat Anett Kontaveit in straight sets on Friday to get a strong foothold in Rome but this will be a tougher test against Donna Vekic. The world number 24 came back from a set to beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Friday to recover well from an early exit in Madrid and she impressed on clay at the Stuttgart Open with a victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova before a very tight defeat to Karolina Pliskova. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a revival under new coach Pam Shriver, with whom she won her fourth career WTA title at the Monterrey Open back in March with an upset over Caroline Garcia. Vekic beat Samsonova comfortably at the Australian Open back in January to take a 2-0 lead in their head-to-head but the Russian has improved significantly since then, although she is still some way from her imperious best that saw her claim three WTA titles late last season. Back Vekic to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
