THE PREDICTION
World number 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova beat defending champion Anastasia Potapova in two tight sets on Friday to look a dark horse for a first WTA 500 title this weekend. The 29-year-old has won four WTA 250 titles, including back-to-back at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on grass, but winning Linz would be her most prestigious trophy yet. World number 34 Donna Vekic also has four titles at 250 level, although she came close to her first 500 when she finished runner-up to Petra Kvitova in Berlin last summer. The Croat has also reached the semi-finals without dropping a set after ousting Australian Open semi-finalist Dayana Yastremska on Thursday and she is dangerous once she finds her groove at this level. Vekic leads their head-to-head 2-1 after victory on clay in Stuttgart last spring but Alexandrova has enjoyed the better recent form on tour. Back the Russian to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two worthy finalists.
