World number 60 Dominik Koepfer looks a genuine threat to the top players this week in Dallas after two encouraging straight-set wins over Aleksandar Kovacevic and Rinky Hijikata. The 29-year-old is a former college star with an affinity for US hardcourts and he has been putting in the hard work off the tour to come back from a lengthy injury absence that kept him away for most of last season – with victory at the Canberra Challenger an excellent start to 2024. World number 15 Tommy Paul remains the favourite in this potential thriller on Friday but it should be a tougher test than his straight-sets victory over Taro Daniel. The 26-year-old lost a tight five-set slog to Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round of the Australian Open last month but a vengeful victory over Jack Draper, whom had beaten him the week before in Adelaide, in the previous round showed progress after a slow few months on tour.
