World number 84 Dominik Koepfer is looking back to somewhere near his best on tour after spending much of the last 12 months in the wilderness. The 29-year-old is yet to drop a set this week after an assured performance over James Duckworth on Wednesday and two hard-fought wins over Dan Evans and John Isner last week in Atlanta put him at a working level of around the top 50 at least. This will be a fascinating clash, though, as world number 129 Aleksandar Kovacevic comes in from the biggest win of his career. The 24-year-old came back from a set down to upset 2021 Los Cabos champion Cam Norrie on Wednesday, impressively taking the second-set tiebreak 9-7 to show some real grit, and this match is the most important of his burgeoning career. Koepfer’s three-set battles last week suggest sets could go both ways here and that makes taking the German to win at least one the sensible move and taking Kovacevic to do one the reasonable risk.
