THE PREDICTION
This could, and should, be the match of the day on Saturday between two former world number threes who have each taken up the mantle as ‘best of the rest’ on clay in the past few seasons behind the king; Rafael Nadal. World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Barcelona Open last week but the campaign was his best by far since recovering from an injury issue that was aggravated en-route to the Australian Open final back in January. Current world number 93 Dominic Thiem has been trying and, arguably so far, failing to rehabilitate on tour after wrist surgery but a run to the quarter-finals of the Munich Open was an encouraging one. The Austrian beat fellow returner Kyle Edmund in straight sets on Thursday for a solid start but despite leading Tsitsipas 5-3 in their head-to-head he is the solid underdog here. The pair have not met since Thiem’s peak in 2020 but five of their eight matches have seen sets go both ways. Back Tsitsipas to win outright, with this match coming too early to credibly pre-empt an upset from this version of Thiem.
