This could end up the match of the day between former world number three Dominic Thiem, champion here in 2020, and rising US star Ben Shelton. 29-year-old Thiem enjoyed a confidence boosting result over 25th seed Alexander Bublik, who was hapless at best on Monday, in three sets to build on his recent Kitzbuhel final last month but the Austrian is still far from, very far, from the player who became such a force on hardcourts before the pandemic. World number 47 Ben Shelton is a special talent in a poor patch of form after initially starting 2023 off on fire, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian Open on his debut, but a four-set comeback over Pedro Cachin should also boost his confidence. The 20-year-old will be well-backed by a near-partisan crowd but Thiem is a popular champion in these parts whose plight post-surgery should earn him some empathy in a match that could well see five sets. Shelton became one of Thiem’s 14 wins this season in a comfortable defeat on clay at Estoril but the American much prefers these conditions.
Sets should go both ways here so back both players to earn at least one or take Thiem, tentatively, to earn at least two as the just about likelier victor. Leave this match out of an accumulator.
