THE PREDICTION
World number nine Taylor Fritz conceded just three games to 17-year-old debutante Jakub Mensik on Saturday to reach the round of 16 without yet dropping a set. The 25-year-old has conceded just 13 games so far, the fewest of the players who have made the second week, but a projected quarter-final with Novak Djokovic if he can come through this test still looks a gulf away in quality. This is no gimme against 21-year-old Dominic Stricker after the Swiss stunned Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets on Wednesday but fatigue should start to be a factor for the Swiss. Stricker will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 87th for his efforts after another gruelling five-set victory over Benjamin Bonzi on Saturday made it 22 sets played since the start of qualifying last week but he will have to cope with the loss of support as he takes on the US number one for the first time.
Fritz has enjoyed an almost too kind draw and it remains to be seen whether he comes in the positive or negative side of rested for this potential thriller. The American can be backed to find a way through the outright winner here but four or even five sets are a distinct possibility against Stricker’s impressive engine.
