THE PREDICTION
Former world number eight Diego Schwartzman reached the third round here last season before a straight-sets defeat to Frances Tiafoe in what has since proved to be his last significant run on tour. The current world number 114 has seemed to suffer a severe crisis in confidence since, with Arthur Rinderknech handing him his first defeat of a five-match losing streak after the US Open that stretched all the way to the Australian Open in January. Schwartzman has stopped the rot a little this year but he still brings a woeful 9-19 record into the first round at the US Open to face world number 73 Rinderknech, who has endured a similarly poor past 12 months to bring a 9-17 record of his own. A recent run to the Kitzbuhel Open quarter-finals on clay was encouraging for the Frenchman but this match looks well worth leaving out of an accumulator between two players far from their best. Back both players to earn at least a set or, perhaps more wisely, leave this one alone altogether.
