THE PREDICTION
World number 99 Zhizhen Zhang won his first ever Masters match on Thursday with a straight-sets result over qualifier Jurij Rodionov. The Chinese will look to his compatriot Yibing Wu’s excellent upset over Denis Shapovalov en-route to the Dallas Open title back in February as inspiration here and he has a solid chance at emulating it against the erratic Canadian. World number 27 Shapovalov beat Jozef Kovalik last week in Barcelona before a comfortable defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas but a victory over Miomir Kecmanovic in Acapulco is his only result of note in what has been a poor season so far. The 24-year-old reached the semi-finals here in 2018 but he has certainly regressed from his younger days as a dangerous maverick to a cut a more frustrating figure on tour and it would not be a surprise to see him ousted here. Always leave Shapovalov’s matches out of an accumulator but otherwise consider Zhang to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
