World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas has something to prove at the Barcelona Open after crashing out to Taylor Fritz in a bad way at the Monte-Carlo Open last week. The 24-year-old beat Pedro Cachin in straight sets on Wednesday to get his campaign underway without a hitch but this looks an intriguing clash with Denis Shapovalov, who leads the Greek 3-1 in their head-to-head. World number 28 Shapovalov beat Jozef Kovalik in straight sets on Wednesday in similar fashion and the Canadian’s last defeat also came at the hands of Taylor Fritz at the Miami Open late last month. Shapovalov and Tsitsipas have not met since early 2020, where the Canadian took his third of three hardcourt wins over the Greek, but Tsitsipas won their only encounter on clay in straight sets and the conditions certainly better-suit him in this fifth edition. Shapovalov has yet to blow anyone away this season but there is no doubt he will be up for the challenge here as a player seemingly only capable of finding his best against the best. Back Tsitsipas to win outright here, although straight sets seem likelier than two.
