World number 142 Liam Broady produced an excellent performance to claim the biggest win of his career over world number four Casper Ruud on Thursday, taking the first set before recovering well to claim the last two with a bagel in the fifth. The 29-year-old also impressed in a straight-sets victory over Constant Lestienne on Monday and he has reached the third round at Wimbledon in successive seasons to suggest he can break inside the top 100 before the end of the year. World number 29 Denis Shapovalov reached the semi-finals here in 2021 before defeat to eventual champion Novak Djokovic and the Canadian has struggled to find that top gear practically ever since. The 24-year-old remains a mercurial talent with all the traits required to thrive on this surface and despite some concerning recent form on tour he has required players ranked 11th or higher to oust him from his last three major tournaments.
Two left-handers facing off here should make for a fascinating tactical battle that Broady has the mentality to win but Shapovalov’s power should end up the deciding factor. Home advantage will give the Brit every hope at another upset here but Shapovalov remains the clear favourite. Leave this match out of an accumulator but otherwise take Shapovalov to win outright.
