THE PREDICTION
World number 27 Alexander Bublik won his maiden ATP title here two years ago but he fell at the first hurdle in defending it this time last year. The 26-year-old has since matured considerably on tour, finally finding enough consistency to produce a stunning run to the Halle Open title in June before a brilliant round of 16 exit by a whisker to Andrey Rublev at Wimbledon. A third ATP title picked up in Antwerp towards the end of the year suggests Bublik is taking his tennis a little more seriously these days, which could not be said for former number 10 Denis Shapovalov. The Canadian comes into Montpellier ranked 137th in the world off the back of one, if not two, truly horrific seasons on tour – eons from the level he is able to produce. A straight-set victory over Hugo Gaston on Tuesday was a welcome break from early exits but second seed Bublik leads their head-to-head 2-0 and the tables have turned in terms of their efficacy in these conditions. This remains perhaps the most unpredictable match-up on tour between two enigmatic raw talents but Bublik should have enough about him to avoid the upset.
TIP: ALEXANDER BUBLIK TO WIN
