THE PREDICTION
World number 52 Jasmine Paolini overcame Arantxa Rus in three sets on Tuesday to get a decent foothold in at the Palermo Ladies Open and she looks a reasonable outsider for a deep run with home support to count on. The 27-year-old leads Dayana Yastremska 4-1 at tour-level and she has, notably, beaten the Ukrainian in both of her campaigns that led to WTA tour finals – with straight-set victories at the Slovenia Open in 2021, where she won her maiden title, and at Cluj-Napoca last season where she finished runner-up to Anna Blinkova. Former world number 21 Yastremska still has plenty of time to climb back up to her previous heights but the 23-year-old is a shadow of her previous self at world number 149 this week. A straight-sets victory over Mia Ristic was to be expected on Tuesday but she looks set to endure a tough day against the crowd’s wishes on Thursday. Back Paolini to extend her record with an outright win.
