THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Nick Kyrgios finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon last summer, taking the first set before seeing the Serb lock-in. The Aussie is currently ranked at world number 33, despite not being rewarded ranking points due to the controversial ban here last summer, built mostly on his Washington 500 title last August and subsequent run to the quarter-finals of the US Open before a five-set defeat to Karen Khachanov. Kyrgios played his first match of the season at Stuttgart two weeks ago and he looked rusty with it in a straight sets defeat to Yibing Wu. Former world number seven David Goffin comes into Wimbledon ranked outside the top 120 as he continues to endure a severe depreciation in form on tour but the Belgian also blossomed here last summer, reaching the quarter-finals before a five-set exit to Cam Norrie. 32-year-old Goffin’s struggles in recent season appear to be more mental than physical and the silky Belgian is always capable of turning it on on the big stage. The same could be said for Kyrgios, though, whose mercurial serving marries perfectly with grass when he finds some rhythm.
This match is well worth leaving far from any accumulators but take Kyrgios to earn at least a set and add at least one tiebreak in the match for good measure. The Aussie leads Goffin 3-1 in their head-to-head with at least a set taken in all four encounters and a tiebreak in two of four.
