THE PREDICTION
World number 13 Hubert Hurkacz is certainly at his weakest on clay but a 3-3 record on the surface coming into Roland-Garros does not tell the whole story after some gritty performances. The 26-year-old will be eagerly looking forward to the grass swing after a searing title-winning campaign at the Halle Open last summer but he has struggled to find consistent performances so far this season despite earning a sixth career title in Marseille back in February. Hurkacz beat former world number seven David Goffin in straight sets in the third round of Roland-Garros last summer but the Belgian had only just won their first encounter, also in straight sets on clay, at the Italian Open to see a finely poised 1-1 head-to-head here. The 32-year-old remains a total mystery on tour after enduring a torrid few seasons with brief, explosive blips of strong form but this could be interesting considering plenty of Hurkacz’ matches have needed deciders this year. The Pole should be finding a way through here but if Goffin finds his now rare best tennis he is by far the more comfortable in these conditions. Back Hurkacz to win outright but this match is probably best kept away from an accumulator.
