THE PREDICTION
This could end up one of the matches of the day on Saturday between two former top 10 stars in Alexander Zverev and David Goffin, albeit at totally different periods of their career. Former number two Zverev will certainly return to the top 10 sooner rather than later as he continues to recover from a season-ending injury suffered in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer but he has struggled to produce consistent high-level tennis so far this year. Former number 10 David Goffin is a different story altogether, coming into the Italian Open ranked at a concerning world number 107th as he continues to struggle with form and fitness on tour. The Belgian was one of the names to avoid on clay as recently as 2020 but despite winning two more ATP titles since the season resumed post-pandemic he has drifted wildly back from his former level.
Having said that, Goffin stunned Zverev in straight sets at the Monte-Carlo Open two years ago to level their head-to-head record at 2-2 and comeback over Luca Nardi on Thursday at least suggests he is up for the challenge. Zverev has won two of their three encounters on clay, including in the quarter-finals here back in 2018, and he can be backed to come through in straight sets against this version of Goffin. It would be wise, however, to leave this one out of an accumulator.
