THE PREDICTION

33-year-old Sorana Cirstea set a career-high WTA world ranking of 21st way back in 2013 and she is on the cusp of, incredibly, snapping that 11 years on after a remarkable straight-sets upset over third seed Maria Sakkari. The Romanian would need to win the title this week to snap that career-high at 20th but she looks set to do so by the end of the month if she can maintain this level, with an excellent comeback over Caroline Garcia in the first round. World number 14 Daria Kasatkina beat Ashlyn Krueger in straight sets on Wednesday to improve on a three-set opener over Diane Parry but she will have to be at her best to halt Cirstea’s momentum.

The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head, with Cirstea winning their most recent encounter at Roland-Garros three years ago, but a first meeting on a hardcourt probably better-suits the Romanian. Back Cirstea to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.

TIP: SORANA CIRSTEA TO WIN A SET
