World number 11 Daria Kasatkina and number 18 Karolina Pliskova have blown hot and cold this season to make this round of 16 clash an enticing but totally unpredictable prospect. Former world number one Pliskova is a two-time former champion here in Eastbourne with titles won in 2017 and 2019 and she also recently finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Wimbledon in 2021. The Czech came back from a set down to outlast Elise Mertens, who had to retire in their third set, on Monday but she should improve in this next match after snapping a four-match losing streak on tour. 26-year-old Kasatkina conceded just four games to an out-of-sorts Anhelina Kalinina on Monday for a first win on grass since her relatively strong swing on her favoured clay last month. The Russian has an excellent game for all surfaces at her best and plenty of experience on grass as a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2018 and a Birmingham runner-up in 2021.
This is their first meeting since three encounters in 2016 where Pliskova won twice on hardcourts to lead 2-1 in their head-to-head but this will feel like a new match-up almost seven years on. Back Pliskova to earn at least a set given her prowess here in Eastbourne but leave this tough call out of an accumulator.
