THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Aryna Sabalenka will start next week as the number one player in the world for the first time after defending US Open champion Iga Swiatek suffered a shock exit by Jelena Ostapenko on Sunday. Sabalenka conceded just two games to Clara Burel on Saturday to reach the round of 16 with aplomb and she will likely thrive under the anticipation of setting a career milestone in this second meeting with Daria Kasatkina in three weeks. World number 14 Kasatkina beat Greet Minnen in straight sets on Saturday to improve on two comeback wins in her first two rounds but a second round defeat to Sabalenka in Cincinnati last month does not bode well for her chances here, particularly as Sabalenka often finds her best form at the highest level. The Belarussian won the Australian Open in January to prove her credentials as the new title favourite here in New York, where she has reached the semi-finals in back-to-back seasons, and she is in strong enough form to reach the last eight without dropping a set here.
