World number 42 Alycia Parks won her maiden WTA title at the Lyon Open indoors on a hardcourt in February, stunning Caroline Garcia with a serving masterclass, and she could be about to enjoy a life-changing run in New York in conditions that suit her best. The 22-year-old won the Cincinnati Women’s Doubles alongside Taylor Townsend two weeks ago to bring some excellent momentum into this first meeting with Kasatkina and she will be backed to the hilt as an exciting young US prospect. Kasatkina should still find a way through but the possibility of three sets makes an outright call the sensible move.
