DANIIL MEDVEDEV
World number thee Daniil Medvedev came back from a set down to beat Marton Fucsovics in a well-contested match on Saturday, emulating his best run to the round of 16 from 2021. The 27-year-old has won more matches than anyone (44) this season, adding a further five ATP titles to his now career total of 20, but he has struggled to impose himself on the Grand Slams so far with a third round exit at the Australian Open and an early upset at Roland-Garros. Medvedev beat Novak Djokovic to lift the US Open title in 2021, spoiling the Serb’s hopes of claiming a first calendar slam.
JIRI LEHECKA
21-year-old Jiri Lehecka will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 32nd after a hugely impressive performance over Tommy Paul on Saturday. The Czech challenged a call on match point in the third-set tiebreak of a five-set slog against last season’s quarter-finalist but then produced maturity well beyond his years in coming back to win the fifth. Lehecka reached the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for the first time at the Australian Open in January before defeat to eventual runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas.
THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Monday in a first meeting between rising star Jiri Lehecka and former world number one Daniil Medvedev. Both players would prefer to play on their favoured hardcourt surface for a match of this prestige but there have been clear improvements in their respective games on grass so far this fortnight to suggest sets should go both ways. Medvedev is the favourite on merit, winning more matches than anyone this season, but Lehecka has now beaten both finalists from Eastbourne this week to look a serious threat in these conditions. The suitably cautious call is taking Medvedev to earn at least two sets but you could add at least a tiebreak for some value, with Lehecka seeing three against Paul on Saturday.
