THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling first encounter between world number five Daniil Medvedev and number nine Holger Rune. 27-year-old Medvedev is riding an eight-match winning streak into the quarter-finals after an excellent, and somewhat statement, comeback over Alexander Zverev on Thursday to show the tennis world that he can perform on clay when he has to and the Russian has won more matches than any other player this season to add four titles to his now career total of 19. 19-year-old Rune enjoyed a strong opener over Dominic Thiem on Wednesday before receiving a walkover to the last eight as Matteo Berrettini once again had to withdraw from the tournament. That extra rest should have given the Dane more time to focus on the task at hand here but Medvedev has lost just three times this season to Novak Djokovic, Sebastian Korda and most recently Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final.
Rune is no doubt the more comfortable player in these conditions but he has yet to hit top gear this season, although a match like this should bring out the best in the Dane. Three sets seem likelier than two and the suitably cautious move for an accumulator would be backing Medvedev to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance. Otherwise, the three set option might be a valuable alternative here.
