THE PREDICTION
This could be a proper thriller on Monday between world number three Daniil Medvedev, champion here two years ago, and number 13 Alex de Minaur, who has proved unlucky for the Russian in recent meetings. 24-year-old De Minaur produced a ruthless display against Nicolas Jarry on Saturday to see just 11 games conceded in each of his past two matches and the Aussie only recently upset Medvedev in similar form to reach the semi-finals of the Canada Masters last month. In fact, De Minaur has won each of their last two encounters to prove something of a bogey player for Medvedev, who still leads their head-to-head record 4-2 after claiming their first four meetings relatively comfortably. 27-year-old Medvedev snapped in-form Sebastian Baez’s 12-match winning streak in three sets on Saturday to improve on a slightly choppy four-setter over Christopher O’Connell but he is certainly some way off his peak level found earlier this season when he won five ATP titles before June.
Severe heat forecast over the next few days will count against Medvedev in this clash but the Russian’s pedigree at this level, and room to manoeuvre over five sets, makes taking the former champion to win outright look the sensible call. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak after the pair saw one in Toronto, especially as Medvedev has seen one in each of his last two rounds.
