World number 48 Danielle Collins blew off the cobwebs on Tuesday to upset red-hot Elina Svitolina in straight sets, conceding just two games to the Ukrainian. 29-year-old Collins set a career-high WTA world ranking of seventh after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at the Australian Open but she had to qualify for the main draw in Montreal this weekend after enduring a pretty ropey past 12 months on tour. World number eight Maria Sakkari played some blistering tennis last week to reach the Washington Open final, snapping a run of five semi-finals lost in a row this season, but that concerning mental block also rears its head in finals as she lost a sixth on the spin since claiming her only title to date at the 2019 Rabat Open.
The Greek should be able to take the positives into this first match in Montreal but Collins will be all the more dangerous with the relief of a big win behind her. Sakkari leads the American 2-0 in their head-to-head after most recently ousting her e-route to the Guadalajara final late last season but both matches saw three sets and the shrewd move could be backing Collins to earn at least one here. Otherwise, take the suitably cautious call of at least a set for Sakkari.
