World number 34 Danielle Collins blew off the cobwebs of a disappointing past 12 months with a hugely impressive run to the quarter-finals at the Canada Masters, beating Elina Svitolina, Maria Sakkari and Leylah Fernandez before losing in three sets to Iga Swiatek. The 29-year-old was then soundly beaten by world number one Swiatek in Cincinnati last week but she will be eager to bounce back in New York with the home crowd behind her. World number 55 Linda Fruhvirtova is one of a new crop of Czech talents rising up the WTA tour and she proved herself a future star with a brilliant run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open back in January. The 18-year-old brings a poor four-match losing streak into the main draw at the US Open but she won on her debut here last summer and she should improve on recent performances for this big stage. Fruhvirtova beat an out-of-sorts Collins in straight sets at the Dubai Masters back in February but take the American to avenge it with an outright call.
