THE PREDICTION
This looks like one of the best fixtures in the first round of Roland-Garros between two recent US number ones. World number three Jessica Pegula reached the quarter-finals here last season before coming unstuck against eventual champion Iga Swiatek, who beat Pegula in the latter stages of four tournaments last season to scupper the American’s chances at multiple titles. The 29-year-old claimed her first Masters title at the very last moment, though, in Guadalajara late last year and then finally beat Swiatek at the United Cup at the start of 2023 to lead the USA to the inaugural title. Pegula was stunned by Taylor Townsend in the first round of the Italian Open three weeks ago but the American is usually one of the most consistent performers on tour, reaching at least the quarter-finals in eight of her 10 tournaments played this season.
Former number seven Danielle Collins has struggled with form and fitness this season but the 29-year-old is certainly a big-game player capable of upsetting anybody at a major. The current world number 45 reached the quarter-finals here in 2020 and more recently fisnih3ed runner-up to Ash Barty at the Australian Open last season to prove her pedigree at this level but Pegula leads their head-to-head 2-0 at tour level after only recently beating her compatriot at the Miami Open. Backing Pegula to win outright is the suitably cautious move, though.
